Hi all,

I recently saw a very nice 961 suede seat, and I was wondering if anyone has any idea where I might be able to source similar to put on my 961 (depending on expense, of course)...?

I've checked the Donnington website but they seem extremely limited in their accessories etc. I don't know where else to try.

Here's a picture of the one I saw:

Any advice would be appreciated.

Its the end of the season. Take it off and send it out. Bring the photo to a custom seat shop. That's really nice, by the way. I've been thinking of doing suede myself.

I got this done with gel insert and leather grips for $350 locally. Much more comfortable than stock.

HI I have found out that the cost of the saddle is around £150 but requires you to supply a seat base available from the factory.

Hi glb,

I got it done here:
http://www.saddlecraft.co.uk

£110 + £15 postage.
(+ my postage of the saddle to them)

However, if you use them, I'd advise to make it overly clear (exaggerate) EXACTLY and PRECISELY what you want down to the last stitch. I detect a slight communications incompetence with them. They didn't do the job I ordered, and it ended up with arguing and going 'round in circles in a subsequent 'phone call. It was entirely their fault but all I got was backtracking, self-contradiction, apparent 'truth-economy' and no offer of a resolution.

Nevertheless - although not what I asked for - it's nice and a (seemingly, so far) good job... I think, anyway.

I don't know if what you asked for was any better that what you got, but from what I saw in the photos it looks like good work and suits the bike.

I will let you know about using them if I decide to go that route.

Regards

Graham

It's lucky that I do like what they did but, in principle, it's STILL not what was ordered.

Just make sure you are very clear (although I definitely was) and perhaps get it written down precisely in confirmation from them back and forth a couple of times, if you use them.

Cheers

Come on Dan, yer gotta tell us what they got wrong now!

It seems normal these days I reckon. I find it fascinating that with all of the communications and information technology we have today... actual communications seem more difficult than ever!

From CVs written in 'text speak' to clear requests being 'miss understood' ... The world is going backwards!!

And yes, I am (prematurely) becoming a stereotypical 'grumpy old man' ...!

Hey Britfan60...

To be honest, I've not yet tried it as I'm scared to soil the thing... and I'm waiting until Spring to get out on the road again. So I don't know how comfortable it is. I expect it's about the same as before as the actual upholstery has not been changed... when I thought about having them add their gel-pad technology, it was too late... the job had been done.

Hey "Fast Eddie",

Ok, well I've been reluctant to mention what the problem is as I am am still mulling over whether to do something about it, or just leave as is.

If you look at the original pic in this thread (the one with the wine/lilac/purple-ish faux-suede) and the yellow "Norton" name, this is the picture I emailed them and specifically asked if they could do my saddle "the same". Now, in my book, "the same" means "the same"! ie with the same colour scheme although after speaking to the guy (email-wise) I agreed it would be better with gold thread for the embroidery... so this (latter) part was ok.

Anyway, it came back as you can see in the subsequent pics.

Since receiving it back, though (Thursday), I've grown to prefer the black as I have it. The black leather is also better than that in the original pic I would say. I'm still pissed off though as - and it's the principle of the matter - it is still contrary to what I ordered. Furthermore, when I contacted the guy with a personal 'phone call, he wasn't particularly friendly about it. He also told me that in the picture I sent him (the original pic) the seat is black... this is rubbish. I then asked him to send me back the original pic. He did while on the line and there it was ... purple as I had sent it. For that sort of business, I can't imagine that the colour calibration of their computers is so far out that it shows up a light purple/lilac colour as... black!!!

On another note, I was told the turnaround would be two weeks. It was three weeks for me.

It does look like a good job although there is one thing...

On the angle of the horizontal part of the saddle up into the 'vertical' back part of the saddle, the overlying material doesn't seem to be flush on the underlying upholstery. If I gently press down on it at this point, I can feel the covering material pressing down onto the underlying upholstery... like a webbing over a space. It's not a huge 'space' but it's enough to be noticeable on pressing down on it.

I'll decide what action to take after the weekend. To be honest, if he hadn't given me this nonsense about the pic showing the saddle black on his computer, I'd have probably just left as is. However, I don't like being made a fool of... or attempts to do so anyway!

Frankly, the guy wasn't particularly friendly and understanding. He was extremely defensive.
