Hello from NZ , my 961 stops a few seconds after starting , has anyone come across this

Welcome Honda.
We'll need a bit more info to help.
Year, and model of your 961?
Are you the original owner?

When you say "my 961 stops a few seconds after starting" do you mean:
1. The engine starts then immediately dies?
2. The engine starts, then when you touch the throttle it dies?
3. ???

Thanks for your reply , its actually my brothers bike and since he is more computer illiterate than me its up to me to
glean some info and sort this bike , problem is that motor will start after a couple of seconds cranking and then stop after
2 or 3 seconds but will sometimes run for 10 seconds ,but when doing a 10 second run the slightest throttle will stop motor.
The bike is a 961 , 2018 not sure exact model will get back to you on that , yes Erik my brother is the first owner , first registered 2020
bike has 6ooo k on clock, he has replaced battery with a lithium one but made no difference , bike has 6 months warranty left but
it is a 3 hour trip from our city to the dealer in Auckland . Rocker cover also leaks a bit is this common ? Erik purchased his first Norton
about 1973 a yellow Combat version ,it spent most of it its life at the dealer waiting for parts from the UK ,at least 3 months wait back then .
Thanks for your help

Welcome Honda.

I agree with TonyA

order a Yamaha 1WS-82380-00 MAP sensor they are better quality than the Norton item. They are pricey, but you can find decent used ones on EBay etc.

Cheers,

cliffa.

Norton switched to the Yamaha map sensor them selves after it quickly became apparent that the Wish specials were dog shite.
The Yamaha map sensor will have a green square painted on it...very visible. The christmas cracker copy sensor is just black.
Additional, also check the vacuum pipe to the map sensor, make sure its secure at the throttle body side etc.

Hey guys , the map pressure sensor was the problem , bought the Yamaha one for $226 NZ
and its all good to go . thanks very much for your help .
Cheers Ian
Nice one Ian, thanks for the feedback ;)

What difference does the MAP sensor make to the running? My 2013 doesn't have one although I noted a reference to it in the manual so I assume there was already a plan to fit them. I remember when I was talking to SC a few years ago they said it would have been easier to setup their ECU for tickover etc if it had a MAP sensor. Is it something that would be worth retrofitting, with the relevant ECU map changes?

Euro 4, so a totally different management system and loom

Would it need a complete loom though, or just a connection from the MAP sensor to the ECU? I'm sure SC told me where it could connect to on their ECU but I can't remember the details. Obviously a different map would be required. Not something I'm likely to follow up but I just wondered what benefits it brings over those bikes that don't have one.

What year were MAP sensors fitted to 961's. I have a friend with a very touchy (2015) bike on start-up and was wondering if this may be an issue for him?

This is something you'd have to dig deeper into with Omex themselves. Their off the shelf aftermarket 600 series ecu's do support a lot of stuff....as to what is laying dormant in the 961's, I couldn't say. Its not something I would have even been allowed to meddle with at the factory.

Anything euro4...so around 2018ish onwards. Basically if it has abs, it'll be euro 4 and have a map sensor.
