961 Idle Air Valve hoses

Hi All,

As part of trying to sort out the poor idle & low speed running on my 2014 961 Sport, I decided to remove the idle air control valve & give it a clean in case it was a bit sticky with carbon build up. That seemed pretty good but I was surprised to see that there were no hose clips fitted on either the inlet hose from the airbox, or the outlet hose to the throttle body. I guess the former isn't too critical as that's to atmosphere anyway, but I would've thought that there should be clips on the outlet hose, as an air leak here could play havoc with the tickover mixture strength in the same way that a split or crack on a carb mounting stub would do. The hoses did not feel like a snug fit on the stubs & they came off very easily. So, after fitting a pair of clips, I'm pleased to say that the tickover has definitely improved & the bike now drops to a relatively decent idle every time rather than coughing, spluttering & stalling as it did before.

There is nothing in the bike's history to suggest that the IAC valve has ever been off before so I can only assume that these hoses were never fitted when the bike was built. As the hoses age & with engine heat etc taking it's toll, it's quite possible that an air leak has developed over time.

Have other owners had the same issue, or were clips usually fitted on these hoses & maybe mine were just missed during the bike's build?

Cheers, Deano.

Deano, yes that issue has been documented on here and on FB and has had a positive outcome for all who’ve installed hose clips. Definititey ( another) something to add to the check list.

Yep, when Rob Jamieson was at the factory i queried the lack of clips was told "they all come like that sir", or words to that effect.

Thanks for the replies. I was already aware that a poor idle was a common issue on these bikes, but I didn't know how common, or otherwise, it was to have no clips fitted on these hoses & whether or not mine was the exception rather than the rule in this respect. It sounds like many others had no clips fitted, including probably many still out there without them now, just waiting for a problem to develop or worsen.

So, check if your bike has got these clips fitted & if not, fit them.! They can make a real difference. :)

Cheers.!
