961 - Heavy Misfire - the full kangaroo

If you do then ask for what was known as the 'Clive modified' open longs as I described. You won't be disappointed.
That’s exactly what I did and you will not be disappointed. Nice deep bass notes and then a glorious bark as it seems to come on the cam above 4000 rpm.
And they even look like a Commando exhaust! Just saying.....

When you got them modified did you get the wheels fitted to the end of them (to support the outrageous length and weight) ?!?

Just askin’...

And how do you know what they sound like ?

The output is so far away...

Do you ask your neighbours to tell you...?

I am currently running the decat with standard silencers. I really quite like the sound. It is very reminiscent of my old 1976 mk3 when winding up. Quiet at low revs but quite loud at full chat.

With the d3cat I can now tootle along comfortably at 2000 revs in 4th with no drama and get good responsive roll-on up to the power band without the engine trying to leap out of the frame. It is a happy little engine now. It is still a bit fluffy between 2900 to 3200 (the slow cruise range). My guess would be that the ecu is leaning out the mixture too much in response to lambda sensor signals. There are sensor plugs on the market that cut the sensors out of the story. They made a huge difference when I derestricted my klx250.

When fitting my decat I found that one silencer had loose lower baffles. I guess Norton will swap the silencer under warrantee. It is an obvious Motad manufacturing flaw. Now I don’t know whether to use the opportunity to get factory open longs or stick with standard. I can’t see much wrong with standards but I am concerned that there is no map for d3cat plus standard pipes. I would love to be comfortable at 3000 revs. I can’t believe I am writing that. The matter should be a recall!

I’m not sure where we ended up with this topic, but I’m pretty sure those with euro 4 bikes who tried using sensor plugs had issues and subsequently removed them.

If yours is a 2018 I’d guess it’s euro 4?

Might be worth asking around before trying that mod Terry.

Note that when Motad went bust Norton continued manufacturing silencers in house. They may have bought the tooling from Motad but there were definitely some changeover quality issues.

As FE says - some euro4 owners (me included) bought bypass plugs then discovered those who tried them did not very good results. If you want a pair to try I have some but you may get a MIL light and not much else.

Have you had a listen to the long opens and modified long opens before you make a decision? Probably the best option. My CR is my only bike which I use pretty much daily and I am now used to its quirks and don't really think about any flat spots or uneven fuelling I just enjoy that glorious howl as I wind it open and enjoy the handling as I dive through the commuter traffic.

I thought i would be my usual tight self and get Norton to replace like with like. So it will be decat plus standard silencers for me.
In this configuration The exhaust is a bit louder than with the cat fitted and the engine has become much more tractable low down. All in all it is a much nicer ride with just the Cat removed (std mapping).
There are only two maps: ‘decat plus aftermarket silencers’ and ‘standard bike’. Std is a bit lean and aftermarket is very rich. Aftermarket fuels even on overun when the throttle is closed. Std cuts fuel when the throttle is closed.
I am starting to get like Clive. I can ignore the now minor fluffinn between 2900 and 3200 rpm and love the very Commando howl when winding up.

I am a bit slow reporting in on this but I think I now have a nice slow to ride 961 just by fitting a decat (a while back) and o2 sensor eliminators today. Std map and std silencers. Hope someone finds that helpful.
