850 MkI identification?

Redline is shown as 7000 on both. Max torque is listed at 5000, and I believe max HP is at about 6200. I take my 850 to 6000 in the first 2 gears. Haven't broken anything yet.

I seem to recall mention in the manual that even though you can rev a Mk1 to 7000rpm in the heat of battle (so to speak), the "sustained" limit is 5800rpm. Superblend bearings or not, the crank is doing a fair imitation of a jump rope at that speed and the crankcases are like a vibrating wine glass right before it shatters. Ignition, carburetion and gearing should all be tailored to personal usage with those impersonal limits in mind....right?

According to the Commando Workshop manual 06.5146, max torque:

45 lb,/ft. @ 5000 Standard
46 lb./ft. @ 6000 Combat
56 lb./ft. @ 5000 850

The Norton (Smiths) tach RSM 3003/15 shows red from 7000-8000.

The 72 Brochure:
Max Cruising RPM (Standard and Combat): 7000
BHP at Seal Level:
60 @ 6800 Standard
65 @ 6500 Combat

The 74 Brochure:
Max Cruising RPM 5900
BHP, Silenced to California standards: 60 @ 5900, 47 @ 4500

So, if all/any of that is right, it seems that there's little point going over 6800 on a standard 750, 6500 on a Combat, or 5900 on an 850 (maybe more with hamcan/peashooters).

I suppose that quite a few here have dyno results - any with stock bikes? I get asked a lot what the redline is and I just say 6000 to keep them from harm when they go over - tell them 7000 and 8000 will be tried!

You guys are speaking of a range I seldom allow my venerable old girl attain these days. 5500 is max for me and only if necessary for quick satisfaction and then dropping back down keeping about 4200-4500 because she's anything but new.

Took my 750 street tracker out this Friday, it's geared a little low. Has a single Mikuni with intake manifold work. Revs right past 5000 and was shifting at 6000-6200 Fun afternoon!!! 850 MkI identification?
