Was woundering how many of you have done this conversion and was it worth the total cost? I can do the turing down of the sprockets myself. How much has to be turned off the thickness?

520 "o"ring chain conversion

Hi Steven,
I did the conversion a number of years ago, and I highly recommend it. It has been my experience that "O" ring (or "X" ring) chains last at least twice as long as standard chains at the same time requiring less lube and adjustment.
I turned my own sprockets, but, part suppliers such as www.clubmanracing.com and www.coloradonortonworks.com sell the already narrowed sprockets and chain as a kit (Norton Atlas front sprockets fit and are 520).
As far as width a 530 chain requires 3/8 inch wide sprocket, a 520 chain uses 1/4 inch wide sprocket, therefore 0.125 inch difference. I don't know if it is all right to turn it all off one side, I ended up turning equal amounts off both sides just to be sure.

I put the CNW kit on my 750 and have been very pleased with it. I was going to have my sprockets machined but couldn't find anyone to do the work so I went with the kit. I use the same DID x-ring chain on my Ducati, so it can certainly handle the Norton's power output.

I still have the stock 530 chain on my 850 but it will get converted one of these days too.

Had mine machined last year and only one chain adjustment in 08 after initial bedding. Usually it's 3-4 or every 750 miles. Yes I only spray lube and I know I'd have got more if I didn't mind the back of the bike covered in oil. Just make sure you profile the teeth correctly after removing material. Definitely recommend the mod.

I can vouch for the lazy man's solution, the CNW kit. Easy install (you do need a couple special tools, including a pretty big wrench, but they're easily located) and I feel a lot better not worrying my chain is gonna snap and take my engine cases AND LEG with it any moment....

520 x ring

Thanks for all the help. I will probably go ahead and pull the primary and get to the sprockets. You Norton riders are the best of the best.
