New on board video of me racing my Norton Commando 750 short stroke at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport) in the Period 3 Superbike class (yes, I just got around to editing it now...!) Big thanks to Fullauto & JS Motorsport

I was invited by Team Obsolete to race along side Dave Roper riding the 1974 spec MV 500 four at New Jersey Motorsports Park in the USCRA North American Vintage Invitational, just a bit of on board video here...

Thanks for posting Doug always great to see more live footage.
Im out for a while as had an off during the Mike Pero South Island Classic .
Bike is fine, bent clip on, bent LHS footrest and brake pedal and bent pride.
Nothing actually broken on the bike.
Should be good for February
keep up the good work.
Regards Mike

Well thank God that the bike is OK Mike...! Sorry you had a little off, hope you are good and will be back at it even more angry than before !

Just out of curiosity , what tyre combination are you running?.
I put my "off" down to the footpeg digging in and lifting the rear, am going to raise them a inch and look at running a 110/90 front and 130 rear instead of 90/90 front and 110 rear. both rims are 18 "
Any experience with either set up?
regards Mike

That's my boy ! Must've been an experience riding the MV.
Riding the MV was a trip for sure, nothing like having one practice and then race on a track you haven't ever seen on a hideously valuable bike you have never ridden... good fun though

Hey Mike, I run 18" rims, 2.15 front, 2.5" rear and a 110/80 Avon AM22 front and a 130/650 Avon AM23 rear, that tire specifically meant for vintage racing where you want a larger tire but are limited to a 2.5" rear rim width, the tire has that 'step' in the sidewall. My swingarm had to be notched to accept that tire- I have pondered whether it is too big, I think a 120 size might work well but I am used to the big tire now. Yeah, you want to keep those footpegs nice and high... When I started to go fast racing I once had a near crash when I dug something into the tarmac and when I got back to the pits I realized it was the sidestand lug-- I hacksawed it off the frame right there in the pits and then all was good.

Thanks Doug, it is harder to get the 120 and most of the younger faster guys seem to prefer the 110 front 130 rear combo.
Avon do supply the canterlever 130 especially for the narrower rim as you say.
have just this minute been on their website.
I am getting hold of a used one to start looking at the fit up.

I ran 2 x seconds in class the previous two races , should have just followed the guy beating me in the third race, but oh no had to pass him on the first lap didnt I ????!!!
It was the first time for me on that track.
Levels raceway in Timaru, South Island

Yes I did the side stand lug thing the first couple of races as well, that soon went!
The pegs have a tendency to touch occassionaly on the very ends, hadnt thought too much of it until now.

Wondered why Doug started back in the pack to see its for his extra sporting pleasure having more to reel in and spit out behind! MV very impressive too seems like could just fly around turns in sonic bliss. Eating my hat and heart out in envy. Best DIY video view points and stability for sense of being there to make pro's green with envy too. Schools will attach camera to a 4 ft boom out to one side and above pilot to see their antics and bike as well as local track. Try it for your own entertainment and our delights some time.

On my meager leaning lesion series, could always hear/feel a hard contact instant before it levered tires up for low side smack down, while tripping off a tire edge I hit ground hard before, aware of feeling something wrong. Shameful/injurious how many times, nuances, conditions repeated to offer such statements to seasoned proven winners. If ya can't lean far enough to counter hi sides, takes away secure fun. I suggest off season experiments with over size tires rounded more on under size (lighter) rims and lifting stance till can't foul, especially front. If already so low knee must be held close to tank before trip off tire edge, ya're already down on the ground (my motto) so no impact, just reflex slack off-push up regains control but now wider in turn yet wiser to avoid next time with perfect sense of current conditions of razor edge to dance on or off of. Scary trick to get away with harder planting a narrower rear profile, (same patch area you have now) is barging into turn so front is extended (iffy traction) in acceleration. Can really sense effect of more profile length holding ya up. Might up rear PSI some not to distort shape much when most mass is suddenly forced on it.

Wondered why Doug started back in the pack

I had to start at the back for the finals Sunday because in the heat race Saturday I pulled up to my grid position and happened to look down to see my front belt pulley wobbling in and out (I can see part of the front pulley through the cover)- the allen bolts holding it on had come loose, I quickly pushed the bike off the grid and so with a DNF had to start the final from the last row.

Thanks for the excellent videos, fun to watch. I'd love to be able to ride Mosport again now that those concrete confidence killers (in my case anyway) in the corners are gone.

Nice, Dougie!

Some of that Mosport stuff made my toes curl. And listening in my studio to-boot, it sounds amazing. Good stuff! I sure would like to come up to Mosport this (next) year.

Thanks Doug, I had exactly the same problem the first season and a half, went for the really soft compound on the rear, found it was 'squirrely' when really hot and also showed signs of excessive wear. I run the medium now also, although a 110 not a 130. The edges of the tread pattern were feathering really bad, I thought it was suspension setup, just the tyre change to medium proved I had the rear settings right.

Women are known for toe curling climaxes w/o aids but don't think theirs matches the multiple peaks yoose obsolete manics hit and induce in others.

Doug, does a fella good to know even Norton God's get what I call instances of out the blue "stunned blank staring states". Guess that cut down your leisure breath catching intervals ripping space to get back ahead of time.

Brooking, your finding a harder distinctly narrower tire surviving more securely than wider softer is relieving-revealing to read. I ain't no racer but may had as much/more scary-thrilling tire sonics and smoke as you planted smooth pilots, so concerned if Mz Peel rear could fit size to hook up potential. I found 110-120 street tire could take short intervals of as much load as 17" 170 race compound before getting dicy which lead me on obsoletes into going in a bit over hot/sharp/tipped then spend rest of turn easing off tire loads to save losing it. Dang 170 tempt ya to expect them to keep grip on edge so can surprise so quick no time to recover.
