Hi all - I'm getting an Emgo tank painted for my combat and am in need of verifying the 1972 tank logo.

I've read that Norton updated their company logo in 1972. Were the commando tank logos all the same regardless of company logo changes? I bought (from a Norton Club member) a 1972 dealer window decal, and the logo does seem to be different - just not sure that the revised logo found its way onto gas tanks.

(am getting a search/server error, so was unable to find another topic on this, but am happy to be pointed to one)

Thanks and yes that's what I was looking at as well. Was this logo change also changed on the tank? I'm having some difficulty finding a source for a 1972 Norton tank template.

Not sure. I think they were the same thru 72 and changed for 73? The model specific pages on this site are broken Maybe contact Jim - his details are on homepage of the site below.

Thank you both. Interesting that the 72 Norton tank logo 'o' is shown equally with the solid and the slotted version. The '73 brochure only shows the solid 'o' on the tank (though most of that brochure is 850). Anyways... guess I'll go with the solid logo.

Yes, according to the parts book for '72, the decals were:
062021 "Gold/Black Edge" with the stencil style 'O'.
062022 "All Black"
063179 "Silver/Black edge"

For '73:
062931 "Gold"
062930 "Black"
063179 "Silver"

However, according to Norton Service Release N3/52, decals of "Improved material cut-out" were introduced in approximately May '73 and which "completely replaced all previous tank...decals".
064880 "Gold"
064881 "Black"
064882 "Silver"

Thank you very much for pointing that out. I was thinking visual but should have looked up the part numbers.

So stencil-style it is. The Emgo tank is very rough around the edges so that is the first order of business.

Thanks again.

The transfers for the 69 and 70 Roadsters were black with a gold outline. Not venal.

Thanks for that info as well.

I decided to take the ‘original’ tank to the painter to get their input on its condition. I’m hopeful it can be stripped and cleaned, sealed, painted, etc. I don’t know how to ID an original tank but assume it is a later one.

The Emgo tank is just too rough around the edges literally and I just can’t see dropping a thousand on it. My plan for it is to fix it as best I can and paint it satin black myself, with black Norton decals. I think that will make a cool outlaw tank for the 850.

That is a great idea. I have a crap old hirider tank that might just get that treatment...
