1970 Norton Commando 750 - looking for tires, what is recommended

A 90/90 should clear then? And would compliment a Roadrider rear too.

They do a 100/90 18 which looks like it would compliment the 90/90 19 well to me.

Check out the options inc size info here:

Thanks for the link Nigel - useful !

As an alternative, consider Hidenau tires out of Germany. I stumbled across their booth at Barber last fall and recently put a set of their vintage tires on an old Triumph. They were tough to mount but seem to ride nicely although I only have a few miles on them so far.

What model Hidenau tires are you using? The only 19” front and rear tire I can find in their site is the K34 offered in 4.00x19. Looks like a decent tire, what was difficult about installing?

All tubeless tires are harder to install on original rims and the wider the tire the harder it is. However, with my 74 year-old arthritic hands I always get it done. Once on, getting the bead to properly seat is usually a nightmare but again, I always get it done.

I recently installed Avon RoadRider MKIIs on one of my Tridents. Extra hard in the rear due to two rim locks but again I did it without help.

400x19 will be to wide for a commando, a 350x19 would be better.

Most for all round riding Avon's RR are great, there is another thread going on about size, you can still ride with old tyres as long as they show no cracking or any other faults, why get replace tyres if there is no need to.
One of the guys in our club put his wife in the hospital - front tire "looked good" but was failing on the inside. I had a similar problem with the rear tire on a long distance ride some years ago, but was able to get the bike over to the side and stopped before it went flat to the rim. The plies on the inside broke apart. This was a three year old tire on a modern Triumph.

I would not go anywhere on a twenty year old tire. Why risk your life for $200?

I have a Heidenau K34 3.50 - 19 front on my N15 on a WM2 rim.
I like it a lot, and it is also pretty good on dirt roads.

Are Avon tires still being made or have they dropped a few lines?
They seem to be in stock many places, but I don't know if those are new production or inventory from before the shutdown of the UK plant. I bought a pair of Roadrider Mk II 100/90-19s in the Summer last year that were manufactured in England at the end of 2023 (4923 date code), then bought a back-up tire a few weeks later with code 4423.

I meant the original size Avons for this year bike are getting hard to find.
Same as those which can be seen fitted to the red "S" earlier in this thread.
Speedmaster 3.00 x 19 and Safety Mileage 3.50 x 19.

If I am remembering correctly, the pre-71 bikes need 3.00 x 19 Front and 3.50 x 19 rear.

90/90 x 19is equivalent to 2.75/3.00 x 19
100/90 x 19 is equivalent to 3.25/3.50 x 19

So 90/90 x 19 front and 100/90 x 19 rear. However, if you want the rear wheel off the ground on the pre-71 center stand, 90/90 x 19 front a rear might be better.

Motosport has both sizes in stock.
