Hi All again.
My 1962 650 SS comes with magneto.
A 1962 650 (dual carbs) of my friend (not a SS) has one 6V coil and distributor.
The question is if the 1962 650 SS had magneto or distributor,
Thank you.
Piero

According to Mick Walker's Dominator book, the 1962 650SS had magneto ignition and the "lesser models" (650 Standard and deluxe) had coil (and therefore a distributor) ignition.

Hi Les,
thank you.

They made some STD 650's and some 650 dl enclosed bikes, with coil ign, the std had a different tank motif paint job and seemed to be aimed at the sidecar guys. The 650 dls were not popular and many were exported to Eastern europe never to be seen again. I have never seen an intact 650dl in the flesh. I really don't think there is a single survivor in the world.

The bike in my avatar is a 99dl with home made panniers and topbox in aluminium ,a fiberglass Avon fairing, and a legshield/engine enclosure called fairshields (i think!)

I'm sure we can find on in a UK museum somewhere. . . . . . .

Just in case you're thinking of converting from magneto to points/coil - DON'T DO IT!
Get the magneto (650ss had K2FC) rebuilt with modern capacitor (frequent cause of failure) and it'll perform well for years.
Also, don't listen to ashman (also from Australia) - he'll just try to sway you to Joe Hunt magnetos
The lucas isn't perfect but does a very good job behind those hot barrels.
Ash's is just hanging' in the breeze - the magneto, I mean - it's on the end of the camshaft.

They do make Joe Hunt maggies for behind the motor so not all hang off the end of the cam, a JH will out preform a Lucas any day and they can be fitted using the Lucas chain and advance units and are a lot easier to maintain, there are two JH models for the Nortons, the cheaper one for behind the barrels and the one that runs off the end of the cam, I have a Manxman project with a race Lucas maggie but if anything goes wrong with it I wouldn't have any problems with fitting a new JH maggie behind the barrels, 4 rare earth magnets and simple maintenance , just ask Jim S who sells all the good gear on here.
Anyways Rob I have no problems with my JH hanging off the end of my cam, but it seems to upset a lot who have never run a JH maggie and have no idea how good they are, we all have our own opinion about them and when your Lucas lets you down I be still riding merry on my way as well the same with EIs I have had two fail me and one was when I was 100 miles from home, I ran a old JH maggie on my 81 Triumph Thunderbird for 9 years with a lot of miles clocked up with it and it never let me down, but I don't sway anyone to upgrade to a JH but I do know how good they are.

Just winding you up a bit Ash - I know they're good stuff!
Didn't expect you to come in so fast though...
Cheers
Rob

Joe Hunt Mags is owned by a Kiwi- Roger Gleeson former NZ Sprintcar Champion

Joe Hunt Mags have been around for a very long time they made mags for planes etc but the modern maggies are even better and are pretty reliable my Norton starts first kick every time and once fired up for the first time during the day will fire up on half a swing on the kicker every time after even sitting on the seat to kick it.
Rob I knew you were winding me up its the Aussie way lol, been to hot and humid today so sat under the fan and on the computer for most of the day so was pretty quick on it lol.

Yeah - very steamy here too.
Might go for a blast tomorrow and clear the head. (oops - sorry Piero - alert, alert! thread derail!!)

Hi Bernhard, The nearest I have come to even hearing of a 650 DL in 50 years was a recent sale of one that had been converted to std bodywork and all the panel lugs cut off. I know of one other in Scotland thats had the same treatment and an Atlas motor fitted. Re-creating one now is most unlikely unless someone is prepared to canibalize a 99/88 Dl ,Tail tubs and off side panels do turn up but nearside panels are rarer than unit construction Dommies .

What's this Bob - a competition to see who's the best thread derailer? Okay, you win!

Pierodn, the thread instigator did ask what is a DL, I suspect that is because maybe in his neck of the woods there is a chance of finding the only one in the world. None round here!.

I understood that all 650ss were fitted with k2f mags rather than k2fc's. Mine and the uk market one I have seen do but maybe export market models were different?

The 1961/62 Norton Spare Parts List shows a K2FC with AAU for the 650SS. It appears subsequent years lists the K2F.
