Hi all

I've just completed 1800 km road trip over four days 1120 miles which took me along the east coast of Australia from Newcastle to Byron bay then over the mountain range to kyogal inland to inverell then back home to singleton.
The bike went mostly really well apart from the last few hundred kms, after fuelling up it went great while powering on but started missing when backing off coming down the mountain range, then came good half a tank on. then played up for the last 70 km after refuelling again but still only when backing off there was no missing when powering on at all.

I washed the bike this morning and apart from the fact it plays up when wet ( lucky I had no real rain on the trip) once it dried out it was fine again with no sign of the problem from yesterday.

I've done the dialetric grease in the air box sensor plus some others but it still can't handle getting wet ... Any ideas?

All in all I was really happy the missing wasn't enough to spoil the ride and it's due for first annual service now so hopefully it can be sorted.

Also got a really handy set of soft saddlebags from 3rd gear here in Aus that fit like a glove will post photo if I can work out how

Hello Bluedog , What year is the bike ? Which map and pipes ? Also are you checking/draining the air box for excessive oil ?

I had a similar problem and it ended up being the TPI sensor. I have a manual on replacing it. You can take it off and check it with a meter to see if it has a bad spot. May not be the cause but def. worth inspecting.

Hi Tony

It's a 2015 sf I have the long motad I was told when they were put on at first service which was in around early May that it was the current map but no further details. I am taking it in on the 7th April for its annual and will be at around 7500 by then it's about 250 km to the dealer.
I'll ask to check mapping which should I be running?
I gotta say apart from that little bit of a hiccup the bike ran really strong , and yes been draining oil every 300 - 400 km and been getting around 20 - 50 mm each time. I will be installing the new collection separator not sure exactly what it's called but I was in the Sydney shop the other week and they showed me them on the new bikes, it eliminates the need to drain.

Hi Richard

I have the manuals I'll go through and have a look at that, I did do the ignition and throttle reset before I took it out yesterday so whether or not that had anything to do with it coming good I don't know, the idling has been good the whole time around 12 - 1500 rpm and fairly steady at that.
I discussed it with the agent and they are suggesting throttle bodies they replaced that first service so not sure we,ll see.
I'm really keen to sort the rain thing out more than anything they said they drowned the bike and tested it when they changed the throttle body originally but first time I got it wet it done the same thing, with the agent being so far away unless they get it this time I feel it's something I will need to sort out myself and open to any suggestions here. Thanks for replying.

Cheers

Hello Bluedog , The dealer will probably tell you to run the 077 map. Its good to hear that the new bikes are getting the air box oil separator kit. I wonder if all new bikes worldwide will get this ? Thanks for the information.

Hello Bluedog
Might it be possible that the charging cable going to the left side under the seat is getting wet? I fixed one with a cover because this may cause a short circuit...
Just an idea, don't know if this can be the reason for your problems.

Thanks Raphi

I'll check that out, was yours losing all power when this happened? Or was the bike just coughing ?

Bluedog , Waterproof every electrical connection you can. spark plugs, coils , all sensors like the one in front of the camshaft . Check your grounds as well , make sure they are tight (behind cylinders and under seat) . What about the head temp sensor , behind the head . ? Main fuse ty-rapped ? Under the seat cowl , ECU connections, Factory greases those too I think. This ONLY happens when it gets wet or rains on the bike ? ONLY on deceleration ? ?

Thanks Tony

I'll pull the tank off and do everything I can get to, I have done the air box and all the other sensors and connections I could get at without doing that, I was originally thinking that the air box one would fix the problem when it didn't I done the others that were easy to see.
I'll try do it before the service in two weeks so that they can have a look if it still doesn't work.
It's not my intention to go riding in wet weather but if I get caught in it I would like to be able to get home without fuss.

Cheers

Hi All

Well I took the tank and seat off and put dialetric grease in all connections, it did look like there was some water marks in the connections under the seat.
I then got the garden hose out and wet each section of the bike and tested it after each time so handlebars instrument cluster ignition, then front of motor and tank, then behind engine, air box then finally rear of seat trying to isolate the trouble spot.
Anyway it ran spot on in each case, we are expecting rain in the next couple of the days so hopefully there will be a bit and I can try it out in real conditions, but initial signs are that it looks to be cured.

Regards

It just drained from the battery a bit, not losing all power and no coughing. But funny indications on the instruments...
