I know, done to death. But, I have two unopened 4L bottles of Motul motorbike oil and an oil service now due. In the UK we don't get the temperatures you get in Oz or the US, for example. So, wondering if it's a bad idea to use this in my Commando, particularly now we're past the summer heat?

My Goldwing likes it, but I'd not put the stuff in my Commando. Just my thoughts...... I live in sou. Texas anyway and the temp is high.

If it is Motul 10w40 break on oil, no.

Search on Motul
Yes, I read the research in the tech topic and did a search, which covers the 20w50s and SAE40-50 oils, not surprising as that's what the service manual recommends. So, I know it's outside the usual.

Just looking to see if there's any real world experience either way. It's not 'break in' oil it's their standard JASO MA2 stuff for regular use. I've used it happily in previous bikes, including an air cooled Harley and Royal Enfield.

EDIT: my gut feel is I probably shouldn't use it. I recently had oil blow from the head gasket. This was (surprising to me) resolved by re-torquing the head and adding a PCV/reed valve between the crankcase breather outlet and oil tank. I've also had to deal with leaks from rocker covers and the oil tank cap. All seems oil tight for 200 miles now. So, I might be playing with fire on that issue. But I wondered if a modern and slightly thinner oil might damage anything within, including liberating any sludge. I'm talking myself out of this!

All I can say is it will be fine to use in your Norton if you want to use it even in blimmy old England and nothing wrong with STP have been running it in all my old British motorcycles for over 40 years, but then I live in a hot sub tropical climate and run a oil cooler without a themo all year round, so there ;)

Use it in your car.
er, wait, now most use 5-30 or 0-20.
Maybe you can use it to start a fire.

You really want your lawnmower to wet sump between each use and whacker your lawn with vibration…?

Of course, if you were as environmentally aware as me, you’d have an electric mower ;)
Ah, but I wouldn't know whether to go for AGM or Li-ion.

Find someone with a UJM and sell it to them. Then buy the "proper" oil, but I ain't saying which.

Appendix- UJM = Universal Japanese Motorcycle, ~ 4 cylinder across the frame, DOHC.

Not with an acre of grass....on a slope.....my 4x4 500cc single mower is crying out for a twin cylinder upgrade!

Let's swamp this with mower talk and kill the oil thread!

(Living in France, I have bought several Motul oils, (gear box, 2 stroke etc.) but even though I have used the 20w50 in a single cylinder OHC 500 race bike, the only Motul oil I would consider for my Norton is 15w50 300V!, successfully used by other racers here for some years before Jim Comstock's sterling work.)

Twin-cylinder upgrade. This should do it ;)

You gotta get a mower with 675cc vtwin with a big wide deck. Yellow Peril.

Goats are great mowers. Environmentally friendly, and fresh little turds are good for keeping dust down when sweeping the shop floor. They are also a renewable resource.
