Are these raw steel or plated?

If the latter, can this be successfully re-cadmium or re-zinc plated without affecting its operation? Looks like it is a 2-piece mechanisim with a piston inside.

It is in my bits bin which I am almost ready to take to the plater, but I am not sure if it is supposed to be.

Mine liked to rust quickly enough so I suspect it's unplated steel.
Then I bought a stainless one , so that is over.

Shouldn't the piston move freely inside?

Where did you find a stainless one. Cannot find that either.

What is the purpose of this valve?
Looking at the oil diagram, I presume it is to partially bypass cold, thick oil on first startup?

SRM sells the stainless one. It has been mentioned that SS isn't the best material for the job. I have one from SRM
and no worries so far.

Thanks. Found the thread which details it.
I will try to remove the piston and cad plate the body only.
Don't need the stainless one on this project.

oil pressure release valve

I've replaced (zinc) a number of these and the matching cap. The zinc doesn't like plating on interior surfaces so I've never had any issues with the piston fitting and moving correctly.

I removed the piston and set it aside. Will get the body cad plated and see how the piston moves afterwards. Cad has a better coefficient of friction than zinc.
